Signifying Monkey

In this African American oral tradition, the trickster Signifying Monkey insults and trash-talks, then instigates a fight between the lion and the elephant. Signifying has existed for a long time and goes by many names—perhaps you're familiar with terms like making fun of, cajoling, deceiving, imitating, belittling, playing the dozen, goading, boasting, dissing, clapping, busting, bagging, cracking on, jonning, or roasting. But arrogance and pride can bring trouble to both sides. Those who bully others may find themselves in trouble.
